[How to] iPhone voicemail to PC

You can use an auxiliary cable and the Sound Recorder application built into Windows.

The auxiliary cable will need to be plugged into the microphone jack on your computer.

Auxiliary cable:
8-voicemails

Microphone jack:
9-voicemails

Once you have your iPhone hooked up via the auxiliary cable, open Sound Recorder by going to Start and typing “Sound Recorder.”

10-voicemails

Play the voicemail on your iPhone and hit record on Sound Recorder as soon as you do. When the voicemail is done playing, hit “Stop Recording” and select where you would like the file to be saved. Sound Recorder will save the file as WMA, but not a good file format for archiving your voicemails. To convert the WMA file to MP3, there are a variety of free programs you can use, such as Switch.

[fix] Office 2013 update not integrated in Windows Update

Frustration: I am unable to update Office 2013. Office 2013 isn’t integrated in Windows Update. The option to “get updates for other Microsoft programs” is completely missing in the settings of Windows Update.

Clicking on the link “get updates for other Microsoft products” just links to a website that says how to open Windows Update.

My machine is on Win7, Ultimate, 64-bit and I am using Office 2013 Professional Plus.

Answer: My default browser was Chrome! Opening the link “get updates for other Microsoft products” in Chrome is no help! Set IE as your default browser. Close all browsers and hit the “get updates for other Microsoft products” again. Now you will be presented with appropriate options. If it still does not work, try toggling your “Compatibility view settings” in IE.

[FIX] Outlook RPC over https

Moving from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. Easy transition for iPhone and Outlook 2007+ on LAN

Different flavors of Android are annoying to find proper settings.

All PCs that were off LAN during Outlook transition from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 refused to connect without VPN.
Fix:
Establish VPN
Remove mail profile
Repair Office 2010. Confirmed Office 2010 SP2 was installed and all Windows Updates
Then setup Outlook with VPN connected
All good, with or without VPN now

[fix] Outlook spellcheck does not work

regret

Mixed versions of Word and Outlook

When you use mixed versions of Outlook and Word, ‘spell check on send’ should always work (if enabled).

For the spell check as you type and grammar checking features, you need to have the same version of Word and Outlook, often installed from the same suite. If you don’t have Outlook and Word installed from the same suite or are using mixed version, copy winword.exe into the same directory as outlook.exe.  This enables spell check as you type and grammar features.

The version of winword.exe doesn’t make a difference, although really old versions of Word may not have the desired effect.

Make sure you copy, not move, winword.exe!

Look for your old and new Office installations at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office, or if using 64-bit Windows, at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office. Each installation will be in a subfolder called “OfficeXX”, where XX is the version number.

hmm. using this will likely drive me crazy in the future. not sure how Microsoft Updates and Service Packs will like having winword.exe in two locations. or how about next time I repair, upgrade or try to uninstall Office or Outlook? use this solution only as a last resort.

[fix] Find proper MTU

MTU

at a command prompt
ping “www.yahoo.com -f -l 1500” (without the quotes)

If it fragments, decrease the size until it no longer fragments.
If it replies, increase the size until it fragments.

Your specific optimal MTU is the largest possible without fragmenting.
In your settings, remember to add 28 to your result to account for the echo and header overhead.

[FIX] Registry hack enables continued updates for Windows XP

deadend

Thank you, Larry Seltzer of Zero Day

First things first. Microsoft’s response to his hack:
We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers. The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

Now, to those still interested. You can hack the registry in Windows XP and trick Windows Update into continuing to send you security updates. The basis of it is that Microsoft has an embedded variant of Windows XP and support doesn’t end on that until April 2016. The hack makes XP look like the embedded version.

[FIX] DDOS Attack! Change your Verizon FiOS IP Address

new verizon ip address

log in to your router by typing 192.168.1.1 in a browser. It’ll ask you for the username password.

The default user name for the Verizon MI424WR router is “admin,” and the default password is “password” (do not include the quotation marks).

  • Note: To improve security, your router password may have been changed to the serial number of your router if you have not changed the password from the default of “password.” You can find your router’s password on the label affixed to the bottom or back of your router.

If you reset your router to the factory default settings, the router password will return to “password.”

Once you are logged in, select “My Network”, then “Network Connections”, then “Broadband Connection”, then “Settings”, then “Release” in the DHCP Lease: section

That’s it. Wait a few minutes for the router to automatically pick up a new IP. Your internet will not be working until it grabs a new IP. Do not panic. Don’t hit the Renew. If you hit Renew, you will get your internet connection right back, but will likely have the same old IP. If you simply wait a little while (less than 10 minutes), it’ll renew on it’s own with a new IP.

[use] Malwarebytes

Have been using Symantec’s anti-virus enterprise solution for a decade. It’s time for a divorce.

After numerous infections that often required Malwarebytes for repair, it’s over. Time to adopt Malwarebytes as my pro-active solution. I also like the sound of their chameleon tool.

Began trial on my desktop. It’s actually got a lighter footprint on my resources, too!

UPDATE: hmm. Malwarebytes is good. Lean, mean and alert for new threats. Got pricing and spoke to sales. Interesting… They call themselves “Anti-Malware and not Anti-Virus”. They expect me to run a “Layered approach”. Run Malwarebytes WITH anti-virus like Symantec. They provide zero-day and recent threat protection, but “don’t bog their software down with a database for old threat detection. That is where traditional anti-virus comes in.” That is NOT what I wanted to hear… I thought I was REPLACING Symantec… errr

[fix] IJ Status Monitor has stopped working

I get this message at the end of every print job or when printing is interrupted by out of paper or ink.

Removing and re-installing drivers and software were no help. Even carried over with a printer model change.

Disable the IJ Status Monitor:
Send a print job, the monitor pops up momentarily to show print progress. Within the monitor, select “Option” and “Disable monitor”.

Not quite right

I am sure I will sound like Andy Rooney, but here I go…

Did you ever notice? In Outlook, I go to the trouble of telling Outlook to “Block Sender”. And what does it do? It puts that sender’s email in my Junk E-mail Folder! ERR! I said, BLOCK SENDER! How about dumping it in Deleted Items!?!

Did you ever notice? I go to the trouble to “Unsubscribe” to some nonsense email. What do they immediately do? They send me an email confirming my unsubscribe! ERR! Hello!?! I don’t want to hear from you!
