MSDE install error

Doh! I am in the wrong folder! Try the C:\SQL2KSP4\MSDE folder!

This drove me crazy. The setup.exe I wanted to launch was not in my current folder, so Windows tried to launch a setup.exe it found within a system folder.

  1. Sorry, but just te be safe: regarding my comment I just posted, at the end I say “AFAIK it’s safe to delete or rename it” – meaning the setup.exe file in system32 of course, not the ‘path’ environment variable 🙂

  2. I’ve seen this happen too. Check your system32 directory, you’ll find a setup.exe there that was left behind there when windows was installed.

Because the system32 folder is in the path by default (I mean the path environment variable), typing ‘setup’ at a command prompt in a directory where there is no such file will give you that one instead.

AFAIK it’s safe to delete or rename it, and after doing so you’ll get the “is not recognized” response you expected.
